How ZEM works differently
Every mechanism below exists to remove a middleman without removing the protection the middleman used to sell.
Settlement
- Paid in stages as you go
- Half the fare releases when the map confirms the route midpoint, the rest at drop-off — neither side is ever exposed for more than half a ride.
- Two-key terms lock
- Both sides sign a digest of the same route, fare, rail and time. Neither side can change the price after the lock.
- Pay in the app you already use
- Money moves peer-to-peer on rails you already use — PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, M-Pesa, bank or in your crypto wallet. ZEM never holds a balance.
- Proof of funds, not a hold
- Your own rail attests that the fare is covered. No card number, no pre-authorisation, no frozen money.
Trust
- Trust Wall
- Browsing is open to anyone. Verification is asked for at the moment of transacting, not at the door.
- Trust Spark
- A new peer starts from verifiable signals they can produce today — wallet, document, rail, continuity — capped below the score earned by completed rides.
- Symmetric disclosure
- Know your driver and know your rider show the same fields to both sides. A network hides nothing from either side.
- Co-signed waivers
- Liability terms are hashed and timestamped by both sides, so a dispute starts from a record rather than a claim.
Network
- Presence, not a people database
- Discovery runs on live presence: a rotating peer id and a coarse location that vanish when the tab closes.
- Rider beacons
- Riders post the trip they want and drivers bid into it — demand is broadcast, not routed by a dispatcher.
- Network Lifeline
- When bandwidth collapses the app degrades to low-data mode and SMS, so a peer in a dead zone still reaches the network.
- Data Oracle
- Aggregated movement, speed and pricing signals with no peer id or route pair attached — the network's own market data.
Intelligence & safety
- Fair Finder
- AI prices a route from live traffic and distance into an open band you can counter-offer inside. No surge decided for you.
- Zemi.ai
- One conversational dispatcher across riding, driving, staying and freight — it routes each question to the model best suited to it.
- Sentiment-triggered recording
- Zem Cam and the dual dash cam stay idle until distress is detected or a peer starts them. Footage stays on the device.
- AI-mediated resolution
- Disputes are read against the signed pact and release history, and the outcome is a recommendation to peers — not a verdict imposed on them.
